Cyber Security: Using HR as a Tool in Cyber Defense

Several recent high-profile information hacks, such as the Federal Government’s Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and  Ashley Madison, has brought the importance of information security to the forefront.    According to a security study by KPMG, the “human factor” remains the “weakest link in relation to [cyber]security.”  Best security practices, however, should not solely be left to IT.  Human Resources is in a unique position to coordinate with IT to educate employees regarding cybersecurity to help prevent and mitigate loss. This program discusses how HR professionals, working with IT and Information Officers, can promote data security policies, educate employees about protecting sensitive data, and evaluate how employees perform related to security measures.  We will discuss best practices, sample policies, and common mistakes, as well as have an open dialogue about the challenges of enforcing cyber security policies.
